About this place
Once settled in, ordering a few skewers one stick at a time is the natural way to start. Torakei offers a broad lineup—beef tongue, pork jowl, skirt, pork belly, and chicken thigh—each available with a choice of 4 seasonings: tare sauce, salt, miso tare, or spicy tare. Finding the right pairing is half the fun, whether that means cutting through richer fat with spicy tare or savoring the bite under a simple pinch of salt. Paired with a brisk Kaku highball or a Hoppy set mixed with Kinmiya shochu, the drinks flow smoothly.
The array of small plates between rounds of skewers is another draw. Skewered gatsu-sashi, tangy pickled offal to reset the palate, and raw garlic chives in fragrant salted tare make dependable companions to alcohol. Hot, petite fried horse mackerel and slow-cooked motsu stew infused into tender tofu bring unpretentious comfort to the counter.
For lingering over something warm, the motsu nabe or spicy motsu nabe ordered for one provides steady substance. As offal and vegetables simmer into the broth, finishing with noodles or a rice porridge set ensures nothing goes to waste. With counter seating and weekend openings from 15:00, Torakei serves just as well for an afternoon detour as it does for an evening stop.
